Hurricane Preparedness Guide
Step-by-Step Awning Removal Instructions
All of us in South Florida know the best protection we have against a hurricane is
adequate preparation. An important part of your planning is to also protect your
awning investment. Most awnings are designed and engineered so that the covers can be safely removed
without damage and stored in a secure area in the event of an emergency. After a storm has passed, the
awnings can easily be restored to their original positions.
Due to the relatively short notice we all have of an approaching hurricane, it is not possible for us to
visit all our customer' homes and places of business to remove awning covers. We therefore ask that you
save the following instructions for simple removal in a safe place for easy reference in the event of a
major storm.
Most local building codes state that awning covers should be removed if winds are expected to be more
than 74 mph. However, we recommend that covers be removed well before hurricane-strength winds are
reached. Try to have at least two people involved to simplify the process.
To remove awning covers, follow these simple instructions while referring to the above illustrations:
- Use a pair of cutting pliers or knife to carefully cut the ropes of the rafters (a), wings (b), and
front bars (c).
- After the ropes are cut, raise both corners of the cover from the frame and either roll or push the entire
cover back to the head of the frame (d), which is usually against a wall.
- Slide the entire awning out of the track to either side. If the track is crimped on either end to prevent
the awning from moving, carefully insert a screwdriver in the end of the track and gently pry it open to
create a larger opening.
- With moderate tension, you should be able to start and continue sliding the awning off the track.. Locate
and remedy any problem if the awning gets stuck in the process. Have a second person follow the awning as
it comes to you. Remember, the tighter you roll the awning, the easier the procedure will be.
- To prevent damage, be sure not to fold or drag the awning on rough surfaces.
- Be sure to remove any debris from the awning and allow the awning to dry, (if possible before folding
and storing).
- If you have more than one awning, be sure to tag or label each one so it may be returned to its correct
location
